British Petroleum Site, Casper, WY
Cleanup Objectives:Remediate gasoline-contaminated ground water for 50 to 100 years
Greener Remediation Strategy:
Installed radial-flow engineered wetland
- Insulated with mulch to accommodate temperatures reaching -35o F
- Constructed treatment cell foundation out of crushed concrete reclaimed during refinery demolition
- Located treatment cell below ground to increase operational control and reduce offensive odors and insects
- Employed “Smart Growth” principles to complement conversion of former refinery to an office park and recreational facilities
Results:
- Treats up to 700,000 gallons of contaminated ground water each day,
- Achieves non-detectable concentrations of benzene and other hydrocarbons
- Operates year-round despite cold climate
- Incurred construction cost of $3.4 million, in contrast to $15.9 million for alternative pump-and-treat system employing air stripping and catalytic oxidation
