The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Office of Superfund Remediation and Technology Innovation (OSRTI) is interested in providing federal and state project managers and other users with timely information about the developments in the field of in situ chemical oxidation technologies. This website contains information about completed and on-going full-scale in situ chemical oxidation technology applications. As of December 2013, the website includes information on 199 in situ chemical oxidation technology projects in various stages of development and deployment. This website can be used as a networking tool (each profile lists a contact) to identify past solutions and lessons learned that would apply to new sites with similar contaminants and climate.
The in situ chemical oxidation technologies described in the project profiles on this website include the use of chemicals such as:
- Fenton's Reagent
- Ozone
- Permanganate
- Hydrogen Peroxide
- Persulfate
The project profiles contain a summary of available information, including:
- Site Information
- Project name
- Site name, location, and type
- Design and Operation Factors
- Oxidant type, quantity and concentration
- Project start and end dates
- Summary and description of performance data
- Summary and description of costs
- Project Data Elements
- Project scale and status
- Contaminants of concern
- Area of contamination
- Presence of naturally occurring carbon
- Geologic setting
- Geology and hydrogeology
- Media type
- Additional performance data
- Additional Information
- Associated vendors or consultants
- Points of contact
- References
The project profiles on in situ chemical oxidation provide varying levels of detail, depending on the data and information available.
Data Sources
EPA obtained data from technical journals, conference proceedings, and information provided by various technology vendors and site managers to prepare the profiles.
How to Search the Website
The website provides a search engine that allows a user to search the profiles by site name, state, type, contaminant, media contaminated, geologic setting, oxidant type, project status, or project scale. A user may also select the button 'List All,' which presents a list of all available profiles. Search results are sorted alphabetically by project name.
How to Provide Updates about an In Situ Chemical Oxidation Project Profile or to Submit a New Profile
To provide updated information about an existing in situ chemical oxidation project, please use the comment form or email Jim Cummings at cummings.james@epa.gov.
To provide a new project profile, please contact Jim Cummings of EPA's OSRTI at cummings.james@epa.gov, or by telephone at (703) 603-7197.
Additional Resources
EPA resources that contain general information about in situ chemical oxidation projects are available in the In Situ Oxidation section of CLU-IN's Technology Focus.
Future Plans for the Website
EPA is preparing more profiles and links for more information on in situ chemical oxidation projects as information becomes available.
