State Coalition for Remediation of Drycleaners Site Profiles
Ineeda Cleaners - Northgate, Hutchinson, Kansas
Description
|
Ineeda Cleaners, 525 W. 30th was located in the Northgate Shopping Center in a retail development bordered by retail, residential and a church school. PCE was identified in the vicinity as part of an ESI in 1993 and the Kansas Drycleaning Program completed an ESA in 1997. Source area remediation was necessary. Contamination is primarily from leaks in the sanitary sewer lines. A sewer line runs perpendicular to groundwater flow and had multiple leaks along the first 1,000 feet of the line. These leaks created several finger-like plumes extending from the sewer line with the main plume extending from the facility. Remediation Status: In groundwater monitoring |

Goals: |
Groundwater - reduce concentrations to below MCLs (PCE & TCE = 5 ppb). Soil - Reduce soil concentrations to below Risk-based Standadrds for Kansas (RSK)(PCE = 180 ppb). |

Lessons Learned
Hand augering the interior SVE well is very hard work, but well worth the effort for reducing the mass in the soil. Thorough evaluation around the sewer line was very beneficial at this site due to the detection of multiple leaks in the line for up to 1,000 feet from the dry cleaning facility. Longer rebound evaluation is preferred, but property owner renovations led KDHE to remove the system earlier than normal due to a parking lot resurfacing project. |
