SERDP/ESTCP Research Projects.
The Strategic Environmental Research and Development Program (SERDP) and Environmental Security Technology Certification Program (ESTCP) harness the latest science and technology to develop and demonstrate innovative, cost-effective, and sustainable solutions to meet the DoD's environmental challenges.
Recent research efforts completed by Department of the Navy (DON) Principal Investigators are highlighted online.
For example, NAVFAC EXWC demonstrated the use of innovative molecular biological tools (proteomics and metagenomics) to investigate the natural attenuation of methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE), NAVFAC EXWC developed a tool for determining the need for vadose zone remediation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) to be protective of groundwater and to prevent vapor intrusion issues, NAVFAC EXWC also identified best practices associated with pre-remedy selection, remedy implementation, performance monitoring, and optimization of zero valent iron (ZVI) applications as well as NAVFAC EXWC demonstrated the use of geophysical techniques to provide near real-time, noninvasive, and cost-effective information on the spatial and temporal distribution of amendments.
