The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has developed this website to summarize timely information about selected bench-, pilot-, and full-scale applications of technologies that treat methyl tert-butyl ether (MtBE). MtBE treatment profiles describe sites that use in situ and ex situ technologies to treat MtBE in drinking water, groundwater, and soil. Projects for this website are collected using information from technical journals and conference proceedings, as well as information obtained from technology vendors and site managers. The project profiles contain information about the site, contaminants, and media, technology design and operation, cost and performance results, as well as a point of contacts and references. This website can be used as a networking tool (each profile lists a contact) to identify past solutions and lessons learned that would apply to new sites with similar contaminants and climate.
The website includes information on 426 MtBE treatment projects, including completed and on-going MtBE treatment applications. The profiles have documented use of MtBE treatment for various contaminants, such as benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene (BTEX), other oxygenates such as tert-butyl alcohol (TBA), or compounds such as chlorinated solvents or polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. The technologies (both in situ and ex situ) presented in the profiles include air sparging, bioremediation, biosparging, chemical oxidation, drinking water treatment, electrical resistive heating, excavation, Fentons reagent, free product recovery, monitored natural attenuation, multiphase extraction, ozone, phytoremediation, pump-and-treat, soil vapor extraction, and thermal desorption.
