This solvent extraction technology uses a proprietary, water-soluble extraction solvent to transfer organic constituents from soil to a liquid phase in a batch process at ambient temperatures. The demonstration took place in 1997 at DOE's Fernald Environmental Restoration Management Project site in Ohio and involved removal of VOCs and SVOCs (ethylbenzene, total xylenes, 1,2,3 trichloropropane, methylene chloride, PCBs) from low-level radioactively contaminated cubic-yard batches of soil, sludge, or debris. The test materials were treated separately in six treatment vessels. Additional information: Rapid Commercialization Initiative Report (2009).
